CN is provoking its workers to launch a strike

"The most important issue in these talks is the health and safety of the workers and of people living near railroads."

OTTAWA, Aug. 29 /CNW Telbec/ - After only a few days of bargaining, it seems that the Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is bent on provoking its workers to launch a strike, regardless of the insistence of the union to pursue discussions.

Negotiations broke down last Friday and the company refuses to offer its formal proposal to the workers' Negotiations Committee. Moreover, no further dates of discussions are scheduled and the company refused an extension of the conciliator's mandate.

In fact, CN wants to use the Labour Code to impose a settlement on the parties rather than bargain by mutual agreement with the union of some 2700 conductors, yardmen and traffic coordinators. CN workers are represented by the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC).

TSB warns of faulty rail car part

VANCOUVER — There are thousands of rail cars loaded with dangerous goods travelling North America and carrying with them the potential for catastrophe because of a faulty part, a Transportation Safety Board report warns.

The problem came to light after a Canadian National Rail accident near Dugald, Manitoba, when the faulty part allowed a tank car loaded with more than 23,000 kilograms of flammable propylene to separate from the rest of the train.

What followed for safety board investigators was the unravelling of a puzzle and a strongly worded warning to Transport Canada, the rail industry, and its associations to keep an eye on the part.

On Jan. 14, 2009, a CN train was going just six kilometres an hour when the 41st car of the 72-car train detached. There was no derailment, no damage and no one was hurt.

The safety board’s Rob Johnston said it was to be a routine examination for their inspectors.

An investigation found a defective stub sill — a part that helps joins cars together — and the same part is used in 41,000 other tank cars.

Official warns of failure-prone rail part

Officials say it was fortunate the tank car stayed on the tracks in last year’s incident.

It was almost a deadly case of history repeating itself.

Sixty-two years after two CN Rail trains collided in Dugald, killing 31 passengers and crew, a faulty part on a tank car filled with flammable chemicals could have led to another tragedy there.

Fortunately, the tank car stayed on the track on Jan. 14, 2009, and rolled to a stop after the faulty part caused it to disengage from the other rail cars.

There were no injuries or damages.

But, much like the earlier collision that led to new safety measures in trains across North America, the latest incident could also help increase safety because the Transportation Safety Board of Canada has now identified 41,000 other tanker cars that have the same part prone to failure.
